〜次第だ: it depends on; that's how

N1 · 14 Set expressions and idioms

Two uses: it depends on something, or explains how things came about.

1) Noun + 次第だ/次第で: 努力次第で, 天気次第だ. 2) Verb + 次第だ: ご連絡した次第です (that is why I contacted you), formal explanation. Do not mix with 〜次第 meaning as soon as. Common in letters and meetings.

Examples

行いくかどうかは、天気てんき次第しだいだ。

Whether we go or not depends on the weather.

お願おねがいがあって、ご連絡ごれんらくした次第しだいです。

That is why I got in touch with you; I have a request.
