Says that someone does a main activity and also another one over a long period.

Noun or verb dictionary form + かたわら. Usually a long-term job or study: 仕事のかたわら. Not for short single actions. Compare 〜ながら.

Examples

彼かれは会社かいしゃに勤つとめるかたわら、小説を書しょうせつをかいている。

He works at a company and also writes novels on the side.

彼女かのじょは子育こそだてのかたわら、ボランティア活動かつどうを続つづけている。

Alongside raising her children, she continues volunteer work.
