Says that because of what one said or one's position before others, one can't act differently.
Verb (た/plain form) or noun + の + 手前. The reason is a sense of face or honor toward other people. The result is usually negative or "can't".
Examples
皆の前で宣言した手前、今さらやめるとは言えない。
Since I declared it in front of everyone, I can't say I'm quitting now.
先輩の手前、断るわけにもいかなかった。
With my senior there, I could not very well refuse.
