〜に至って(は): only when it reached ...; at the stage of

Says that only at an extreme stage did something finally happen or get noticed.

Noun or verb dictionary form + に至って(は). Usually the result is a late realization or action: 〜に至って初めて. Negative form 〜に至っても means "even at that point".

Examples

事態じたいが深刻しんこくになるに至いたって、やっと会社かいしゃは調査ちょうさを始はじめた。

Only when the situation became serious did the company finally start an investigation.

倒たおれるに至いたって初はじめて、彼かれは自分じぶんの無理むりに気きづいた。

Only when he collapsed did he realize he had pushed himself too hard.
