Expresses ability or possibility.

Godan: u→e + る (書く→書ける). Ichidan: stem + られる (食べられる). する→できる, 来る→来られる. The object often takes が. Casual ら抜き: 食べれる.

Examples

私わたしは日本語にほんごが少すこし話はなせます。

I can speak a little Japanese.

朝あさは早はやく起おきられない。

I can't get up early in the morning.
