The subject receives an action; also the 'suffering' passive.

Godan: a-row + れる (書かれる). Ichidan: stem + られる. される, 来られる. Agent marked with に. Honorific and potential forms look the same.

Examples

私わたしは先生せんせいにほめられた。

I was praised by the teacher.

雨あめに降ふられて、全身ぜんしんぬれた。

I got caught in the rain and was soaked.
