〜なくてはいけない: must; have to (casual)

N4 · 03 Obligation, advice & negatives

Expresses obligation: it will not do if you do not.

ない-form: drop い, add くてはいけない. Same meaning as 〜なければならない; slightly more conversational. Spoken: 〜なくちゃ. Also 〜ないといけない.

Examples

早はやく寝ねなくてはいけない。

I have to go to bed early.

来週らいしゅうまでに本ほんを返かえさなくてはいけません。

I have to return the book by next week.
